When it comes to bold and unique watch designs, Roger Dubuis is the Maison to look out for. Standing for expressive and contemporary hyper horology, the maison is on a quest of elegance that combines pleasure, madness and freedom to offer the most exciting ways to experience this exclusive genre.
Hyper horology comes in many forms, with different approaches to materials being used, for example to create an ultra-light or ultra-robust watch. With the Roger Dubuis Excalibur Knights of the Round Table, the brand is approaching the scene of hyper horology through the use of exclusive materials and the artistry of micro-sculpting. Based around the mythical knights in the fellowship of King Arthur, which represent the codes of chivalry, equality as well as the expectation to be the best form of themselves and others, the latest iteration of the Knights of the Round Table is taken to new heights.
Through the usage of modern craftsmanship, which took one and a half years to master, each of the 12 handmade knights around the dial are unique in their posture, armory, weapons and shield. Positioned around a puzzle of glass pieces, which reminiscences the earth breaking up around and a yet invisible enemy emerging from it, the knights are ready to fight whatever challenges them. This imagined scene, in which the knights are preparing to defend themselves against the upcoming danger, each of them is settled against a transparent blood red flange made from precious Murano glass. The same material, albeit in a different color, is used to create the shiny black texture of the dial. Furthermore, the chosen colors of the Murano glass contrast beautifully against the 45mm 18k pink gold case and the bold black strap.
From the broken up center of the dial the hands emerge to tell the time, but they definitely are not the first thing you look at when seeing this piece. The displayed scene is what grabs the observer's attention first and in order to further enhance the view on it, Roger Dubuis has lifted the 18k pink gold bezel from the monobloc case of the same material with a sapphire ring. The crown of the watch features an equally stunning visual experience, resembling the guard of a sword making it look as if it is stuck inside the watch, just like the Excalibur sword was stuck in a stone before being pulled out by Arthur.
Behind the sapphire caseback, the owner can observe the handcrafted and meticulously finished automatic movement that bears the Poinçon de Genève, which is one of the most exclusive certifications in the world of horology. To finalize the design, the rotor has been modified to feature two circular layers of tilted pyramid shapes that resemble the appearance of castle-stained glass. Around the exhibition caseback the sentence “Around this table, the bravest knights will gather as equals. They will set forth in search of adventure, righting wrongs, protecting the weak and humbling the proud.” can be read that honors the mythical sentiment of this hyper horology timepiece.
All in all the Knights of the Round Table combines horological craftsmanship, artistic mastery and unbridled creativity to create a timepiece that truly deserves being considered hyper horology. As one certainly can imagine, only a few will have the opportunity to own this artistic masterpiece, of which only 28 pieces will be made.
