Winding a Tudor watch

Winding a Tudor watch

Owning a Tudor watch is about embracing robust craftsmanship, heritage-inspired design, and cutting-edge reliability. Whether it’s the adventurous Black Bay, the refined Glamour, or the high-performance Pelagos, each Tudor timepiece is built for precision and durability. To keep your watch performing at its best, proper winding is essential. Whether you own a self-winding or manual Tudor, following the correct winding process ensures accuracy, longevity, and a seamless experience - just as Tudor’s watchmaking legacy intends.

Understanding Tudor’s self-winding movement

Most Tudor watches are equipped with a self-winding mechanical movement, meaning they wind themselves through the natural motion of your wrist. The rotor inside the watch oscillates as you move, storing energy in the mainspring to keep it running smoothly. However, if the watch remains unworn for an extended period, the power reserve depletes, requiring manual winding.

How to wind a Tudor watch

If your Tudor watch has stopped because of inactivity, follow these steps to wind it manually:

  1. Find the winding crown on the right side of your watch case. This small but essential component allows you to manually wind the movement when necessary.
  2. For many Tudor models, the crown is a screw-down type to ensure water resistance. Gently unscrew it counterclockwise until it pops into the winding position.
  3. Turn the crown clockwise approximately 30-40 times to fully charge the mainspring. You’ll feel slight resistance when it is almost fully wound.
  4. Once winding is complete, push the crown back in and screw it down tightly to maintain water resistance.

Daily wear and power reserve

Tudor’s in-house calibers, such as the MT5612 and MT5402, offer power reserves of 70 hours. This means that with regular wear, your watch will stay wound without manual intervention. If you don’t wear it for extended periods of time, occasional manual winding or a watch winder is recommended.
